Pronunciation of HURT
UK: / hɜːt /
US: / hɜːrt /
British English: In British English (Received Pronunciation), “HURT” (past tense) is pronounced /hɜːt/. It uses the long open-mid central unrounded vowel /ɜː/ followed by the voiceless alveolar stop /t/. Because RP is non-rhotic, the letter r is not pronounced.
American English: In General American English, the pronunciation is /hɝːt/. It uses the r-coloured open-mid central vowel /ɝː/ (sometimes written /ɜrt/) followed by /t/. This reflects the rhotic nature of most American accents, so the r is pronounced.
